Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Rice Krispie Treats

6 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 10.5-ounce bags of marshmallows
Up to 1 cup of peanut butter (using dark chocolate is optional)
1-1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon salt
8 cups Rice Krispies
1 cup chopped Reese's peanut butter cups (using dark chocolate is optional)
1 cup chocolate chips (dark chocolate is optional)

  1. Butter a 9" x 13" pan and chop up dark chocolate Reese's peanut butter cups into quarters until you have 1 cup. Set aside.
  2. Melt the butter over low heat in a large pot and add marshmallows to the melted butter. Stir until all of the marshmallows are melted.
  3. Stir in the peanut butter, vanilla, and salt. Mix well. Add in the Rice Krispies, about one cup at a time, and stir until they are evenly coated.
  4. Remove the pot from the heat and stir in the peanut butter cups and chocolate chips. Mix until pieces of chocolate are scattered throughout the mixture but don't over mix so that the pieces are all melted.
  5. Transfer the mixture into the buttered pan. Spread as evenly as possible, continually pressing on the surface until it is flat.
  6. Let sit for about an hour before enjoying.
