A Cookie Addiction Is Born

It all started Christmas of 2011…

To say that my mother-in-law is an amazing cook, entertainer, and homemaker is an understatement. If you visit her home at Christmastime you will be filled with the holiday spirit. From the delicious homebaked goods to the stunningly decorated Christmas tree, she truly goes out of her way to make it “the most wonderful time of the year”.

That is why, when I heard my in-laws would be visiting us for Christmas, I knew I wanted to try and make something special, something homemade. Despite previous mishaps in the kitchen, on projects as simple as microwave popcorn and broccoli with cheese sauce (any one of my siblings will be happy to give you the details), I searched the Internet for ideas. In the end, I decided to make Bakerella’s Christmas Tree Cake Pops and sugar cookies decorated with store bought icing. The cake pops came out super cute but were barely eaten. The sugar cookies, on the other hand, were a big hit!

A special thank you goes out to one of my sisters, a baking queen, who saved me alot of time and frustration. Any time I ran into a problem, like dough spreading, I could just pick up the phone for advice.

After the holidays were over, I began experimenting with royal icing and different sugar cookie recipes. The first cookies I made with royal icing were nothing to brag about but were a major improvement from my Christmas cookies.

Soooooo…….. I decided to start this blog to share my sugar cookie experiments.

My name is Janine and I’m a sugar cookie-aholic.

    Hi Janine

I’m literally just starting the whole cookie decorating venture. I’m so new I don’t even have a cookie related name for myself haha!! Any suggestions lol :)

I’m from Australia and found you through a post on Facebook by The Baked Equation. Like you, I’ve been following posts and tutorials from other cookiers trying to learn their fantastic skills in order to make something half decent, but I’m getting there. I really need to practice my piping skills (they all make it look so easy) and find a royal icing recipe that I’m happy with (ingredients are a little different here in the land of oz).

Looking forward to following your progress :)

Hi, Tania. Welcome to the world of cookieing! It is do much fun and there’s lots to learn.

One of the names I considered for my blog was The Cookie Patch. You’re welcome to it. To come up with a name I liked I took a couple weeks and wrote down everything I could think of. Then narrowed down my list from there.

To find an icing recipe you like a suggest trying a variety from your favorite bloggers. Everyone has slightly different tastes. Sweetopia abs Sugarbelle have recipes that get rave reviews. You might also want to try a glaze (I Am Baker) and buttercream (Karen’s Cookies). I use a variation of an icing that I found on Cookiers R Us. It’s called Dippin Pops Royal Glaze.

Have fun and practice, practice, practice! Please let me know if there’s anything I can help you with. You can find me on Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, Pinterest. Or you can always email me at .

My addiction started this Christmas too (2011). I was using store bought cookie dough and a simple glaze but now I like royal icing and have found a cookie recipe I love. I’ve seen my addiction grow in the last few months and I love reading blogs like yours. Thanks!

Thanks for sharing your story, Lori. I hope you’re having as much fun with it as I am! And I hope your cookie cutter drawer is getting stuffed full like mine :)
