A Tribute to Newtown, Connecticut
When I first learned about Cookies and Crafts for Sandy Hook, I knew I wanted to join the group of bloggers paying tribute to the victims, families, and community of Newtown, Connecticut. As I sit at my computer today, I find it hard to put together words to express how a gut-wrenching tragedy like this has affected so many lives. To say that I will be holding my tiny loved ones a little closer this holiday season seems cliché, yet it is true.
I know that this blog post is only a small token of support and will not change the struggle that the families in Newtown have ahead of them. But as a small part of a large voice, I hope that this united expression of support by bloggers will touch the lives in Newtown in some small way.
My sincere condolences go out to the families of Charlotte, Daniel, Rachel, Olivia, Josephine, Ana, Dylan, Dawn, Madeleine, Catherine, Chase, Jesse, James, Grace, Anne, Emilie, Jack, Noah, Caroline, Jessica, Avielle, Lauren, Mary, Victoria, Benjamin, and Allison.
For those wishing to offer financial support to families of Newtown, Dorothy at Crazy for Crust, and the organizers of Cookies and Crafts for Sandy Hook, found the Newtown Youth and Family Services. According to their website, Newtown Youth and Family Services, Inc. is a “licensed, non-profit, mental health clinic and youth services bureau dedicated to helping children and families achieve their highest potential. NYFS provides programs, services, activities, counseling, support groups and education throughout the Greater Newtown area.” All donations made to them are going back to those affected by the school shooting.
As a part of Cookies and Crafts for Sandy Hook, the blog post that I chose to dedicate to the victims, families, and community of Newtown is for a special project that you can share with your children and small loved ones this holiday.
Christmas Breakfast | Holiday Pancakes You Can Make at Home
With a blog focused on sweets, breakfast isn’t a topic I cover often, if at all. But Christmas pancakes as fun and easy as these certainly qualify for “creative sweets made simple”. Start a new tradition at your house by whipping up a batch of these for Christmas breakfast this year!
Supplies for Christmas Breakfast Pancakes
To make Christmas breakfast pancakes, you will need:
-
Your favorite pancake recipe
-
Pancake flipper
-
Food coloring in red, green, white and ivory
-
Black and red confetti sprinkles
-
Orange, yellow and white star or flower-shaped sprinkles
-
Piping bags and ties
-
Pair of tweezers (clean, for food only)
How To Prepare the Batter for Christmas Breakfast Pancakes
To make colorful holiday pancakes for Christmas breakfast, start by preparing your favorite pancake batter. I keep things simple and use the pancake recipe on the back of the Bisquick box. If you have a tastier recipe, I would love to try it for my next Christmas breakfast (or maybe a little earlier in the year)!
Heat up your griddle as you are preparing the batter for your Christmas breakfast pancakes.
Divide the batter into four sections. Use your food coloring to dye each section a different color, red, green, white and ivory. Then, pour each colored batter into a piping bag and tie off the end of the bag. When you are ready to use each color, simply cut off the tip and begin piping.
How To Make Santa Pancakes
To make the Santa pancakes, start by laying down a heart-shaped sprinkle for the nose and two black confetti sprinkles for the eyes. Use a (clean, for food use only) pair of tweezers for more precise placement. Next, use your ivory colored batter to pipe a rounded rectangular shape over the sprinkles for Santa’s face. Working quickly, use your red batter to pipe a triangle for Santa’s hat and your white batter to draw in the ball on Santa’s hat and the beard. Save the white batter for last so that it doesn’t brown on the griddle. When the bottom side of your Santa pancake is cooked, flip it to cook the other side.
Quick Tip: Don’t aim for perfection. It is important to move quickly so you don’t over cook your pancakes, resulting in a rubbery Christmas breakfast. Pancakes have a blob-like shape by nature, your lines and shapes do not need to be precise.
How To Make Christmas Tree Pancakes
Scatter white star or flower-shaped sprinkles onto your griddle. On top of the sprinkles, draw triangle shapes with your green batter to make a Christmas tree shape. While the batter is cooking, place a yellow star sprinkle at the top of the tree. Once the under side of the Christmas tree pancake is cooked, flip it to cook the other side.
How To Make Snowman Pancakes
Set your sprinkles for the snowman on the griddle, two black confetti sprinkles for the eyes, one orange star or flower-shaped sprinkle for the nose, and three red confetti sprinkles for the buttons. Then, use your white batter to draw two circles on top of the sprinkles for the snowman’s body. Wait until the underside of the snowman pancake is cooked and then flip it over to finish cooking.
These colorful holiday pancakes were inspired by the creativity of Meaghan from The Decorated Cookie. I saw her Garden Decorated Pancakes back in July and instantly fell in love with them. I knew there would be colorful pancakes in my near future!
