Lessons Learned: Cover Icing While It’s Drying with Mesh Food Covers

Protect Icing with Mesh Food CoversOne of the downsides to decorating cookies with royal icing is that the cookies have to sit out while the icing dries. This provides the perfect opportunity for any little fuzzies, stringies, or whispies in the air to land smack dab in the middle of one of your works of art. Well, fear the fuzzies no more! These mesh food covers are the solution.

Protect Icing with Mesh Food CoversProviding a collapsible cover for your royal icing, mesh food covers are an inexpensive way to protect your icing from what floats in the air. I found my 15″ mesh food covers on Ebay, where I got a pack of 3 for $9.45. And a quick search on Amazon reveals that you can get mesh food covers in a large 24″ size and different colors. If you would like a local source, you can often find mesh food covers in the camping department at sports stores.

Plus, these babies are easy to store. They collapse down like an umbrella so they don’t take up a lot of precious cookie cutter space. You can keep collapsible mesh food covers in a kitchen drawer for easy access.

If you are a home baker with pets, in a constant struggle to fend off unruly cat or dog hair, mesh food covers are your royal icing’s best friend. When you finish icing your cookies, simply set them on the counter to dry as usual and pop open a mesh food cover for protection. Portable, collapsible, and kinda cute… what more can a cookier ask for?

I agree, Callye. It’s nice how they add that touch of lace around the bottom. They actually look kinda cute sitting out on the counter.
