For my birthday, my sister sent me some garden-themed cookie cutters. The set included flowers, a butterfly, a watering can, and a frog, which immediately was my favorite. My first time using the cutter I made some super cute frog pancakes…
And now I’m excited to finally use the frog cookie cutters for some frog sugar cookies!
To make these frog cookies you will need:
- Sugar cookies made from your favorite sugar cookie recipe
- A frog cookie cutter
- Royal icing in the following colors: green, yellow, black, and pink or red (I used one consistency for everything, a 12-13 second icing.)
- Icing bags, tips, and couplers
- A food coloring marker in any color
- Royal icing eyeballs
Start by using your food coloring marker to draw an outline of the frog’s tummy and spots. Next, outline the frog shape in green royal icing, tracing around the tummy and spots that you drew. I used a #2 tip for this step. Immediately fill in all the green areas of the frog with royal icing and place your royal icing eyeballs onto the wet icing.
The royal icing eyeballs that I used were left over from some pug cookies that I made. It’s a great idea to make a bunch of royal icing eyes and store them in an air tight container. Then, you will always have some on hand when needed. For step-by-step directions on how to make royal icing eyeballs, check out Royal Icing Googly Eyes by How Does She. You can also purchase premade royal icing eyes at various places online.
After you’ve filled the frog cookie with green royal icing and added your eyes, let the icing dry for about 20 minutes. Then, outline and fill the yellow areas of the frog. Let the frog cookies dry overnight.
Once the base of the frog cookies have thoroughly dried, you can add your accents. With the black royal icing, draw the frog’s mouth and with the pink or red royal icing draw a long swirled tongue. I used a #1.5 tip for the accents. If you don’t want to make a batch of royal icing just for the mouth and tongue, you can also draw these parts on with food coloring markers.
You can stop there with your frog cookies or you can get creative and add more accents. If you have left over black and red icing, you may want to add lady bugs. To learn how to make lady bug royal icing transfers, check out this tutorial by Sweet Creations by Stephanie. If you have extra pink icing, you could add flowers to your frogs. Sweet Sugarbelle has a great tutorial on ribbon roses that you can find here.
