Brownies for Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month

Ovarian Cancer Awareness Treats

GOT TEAL’D? Teal is the color of ovarian cancer awareness and the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition is encouraging everyone to raise awareness about the disease by “TEAL-ing”. What better way to get teal’d than with sweets?

Ovarian Cancer Awareness Cookies

To start “TEAL-ing” your sweets, you will need ovarian cancer survivor ribbons… the royal icing transfer kind! Mix up a batch of your favorite royal icing, use gel food coloring to make it the right color teal (I used a combination of Wilton Teal and Americolor Electric Blue), and print out your clip art for tracing. Use the flat side of a basket weave piping tip to trace your ribbon shape onto wax paper and sprinkle with sanding sugar while the icing is still wet. Once the icing has completely dried, your ovarian cancer survivor ribbon transfers can be used to decorate the sweets of your choice. (For more details on how to create royal icing transfers, see How To Transfer Designs Onto Cookies.)

Ovarian Cancer Awareness Ribbon Icing Transfers

Once I made my cancer ribbon royal icing transfers and decided I wanted to make brownies, I had to figure out what brownies I wanted to make. With about a billion different recipes available, the choice was not easy. My top priorities… easy to make and worth every calorie to eat!

I decided on Alton Brown’s Cocoa Brownies made by Sweet As Sugar Cookies. As Lisa of Sweet As Sugar Cookies states, “Alton Brown is THE man when it comes to recipes”, so I knew the brownies would be delicious. Plus, the recipe required no chocolate melting and Lisa gave the thumbs up on skipping all the sugar sifting, my least favorite part of baking. Thank you, Lisa, for sharing this recipe… the brownies were definitely worth every calorie!

Ovarian Cancer Awareness Brownies

To make the brownies, start by preheating your oven to 300 degrees and buttering and flouring an 8-inch by 8-inch pan.

Use a whisk to beat 4 large eggs and set the mixture aside.

Put 1 cup of butter in a microwave safe bowl and heat in the microwave for 30-second increments on 50% power until the butter is melted. According to Diana of Diana’s Desserts, melting the butter instead of creaming it with the sugar helps to produce a fudgier brownie.

Transfer the melted butter to a mixing bowl. Add 1 cup of granulated sugar, 1 cup of brown sugar, and 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract to the melted butter. Combine.

Add 1 and 1/4 cups of unsweetened cocoa powder and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Combine.

Mix in the eggs. Then, fold in 1/2 cup of flour until combined.

Pour the brownie batter into the baking pan.

How To Make Brownies

Check and see if the brownies are done at 45 minutes by inserting a toothpick into the center. You’ll know the brownies are ready to be removed from the oven when the toothpick comes out mostly clean, with just some brownie crumbs. Continue to bake for up to an hour if needed.

Set the brownies aside to cool before cutting them.

Ovarian Cancer Awareness Treats

September is National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. If you are like me and someone close to you has been diagnosed with this disease then you know what a silent killer it can be. Since there is no early detection for ovarian cancer, recognizing the symptoms of the disease is essential for diagnosis. Symptoms include: swelling of the stomach, sudden weight gain or bloating, persistent pelvic or abdominal pain or pressure, trouble eating or feeling full quickly, feeling the need to urinate urgently or often. Early detection saves lives. For more information on ways to help spread ovarian cancer awareness visit WhyTeal.org.    #gotteal’d?

What a yummy way to bring awareness to such an important month. It was very creative to use a template to make the frosted cancer ribbon. I’ll have to remember this technique when I want to create something complicated in sugar. Thanks for sharing at our link party!

Alexa, I’m so sorry to hear about your loss to this horrible disease. My mother-in-law was diagnosed a couple of years ago. I hope my treats can help get the word out, even in a small way, about the importance of early diagnosis and recognizing the symptoms.
