These easy watering can cookies are great as a gift for any gardening lover! And if you’re a gardener too, why not treat yourself! To add to the level of cuteness, you can pair them with some flower cookies and frog cookies. Why not take it to the next level and use a real watering can as a gift basket and include some cookie pops!
To make watering can cookies you will need:
- Cookies made from your favorite sugar cookie recipe and cut using a watering can cookie cutter (or for chocolate cookies, I highly recommend LilaLoa’s End-All for Chocolate Cookies Recipe)
- Royal icing in white, black, and any other two or three colors you choose (I used pink, green and yellow.) I made all the icing the same consistency, a 12 to 15-count icing.*
- Sparkling sugar in colors matching your spout and handle icing colors (I used green and pink)
- Icing bags or bottles, couplers, and tips (I used a #2 tip for all the steps in this tutorial.)
Sweet Little Tip: Long thin parts of a cookie are prone to breakage. If the spout snaps off of any of your watering can cookies, simply glue it back on with a little bit of royal icing before decorating. Royal icing makes the best glue! Of course, if you get to eat the sugar cookies that end up in the reject pile, you might not want to fix it!
Begin by outlining and immediately filling the spout of the watering can cookies with green royal icing. While the icing is still wet, sprinkle sparkling sugar over the spout area. Set each cookie aside, to let the icing dry a little, while you continue working on a few other cookies. After a few minutes, you can remove any excess sugar from the iced cookies but gently turning them vertically and tapping. If needed, you can remove stubborn sugar with a small, clean (for baking only), dry paint brush.
After you have removed the excess green sparkling sugar, outline and immediately fill the handle of the watering can cookies with pink royal icing. Sprinkle pink sparkling sugar over the handle area. Set the cookies aside to allow the icing to dry for about 2o minutes before moving on to the next step.
Sweet Little Tip: If you work over a disposable coffee filter when using sparkling sugar, excess sugar can easily be poured right back into the sugar container. No waste!
Once you are confident that the green and pink royal icing have dried, outline and immediately fill the middle section of the watering can cookies with white icing. To add the flower pattern, continue working while the icing is still wet. Scatter small dots of black icing throughout the white icing for the flower centers. Then, place five dots of pink, green or yellow icing around each black dot. The dots will appear somewhat raised at first but will blend down into the white icing for a smooth finish.
Simply set the cookies aside to dry for 24 hours and then they are ready for packing, shipping, or just for you to enjoy!
What’s that you say? The flower pattern on the white background is super cute? Well, I couldn’t agree more! The inspiration for this design came from Simple Sweets by Honeybee’s April Showers Bring May Flowers Cookies. I fell in love with the simple and pretty flower design that she used on the umbrellas and rain boots when I first saw them in March. Thank you for the inspiration, Melissa!
